Ultra Violet Band
My Role: All (solo project)
A wearable device that detects the current UV Index from the sun and glows when the UV level is harmful (3 or higher). Can be restructured into a wrist band or a leg band.

Ideation
I wanted to create a wearable device that would detect the current UV level to warn the users of potential sun damage. In a world where UV radiation is becoming more and more of a relevant threat, I thought a project focused on sun protection would be important. According to WHO, there were 1.5 million cases of skin cancer in 2020, and UV radiation is a one of the main causes. I initially wanted this device to be incorporated into a hat, but I decided on a wrist or leg band because it would be simpler to put on as an accessory with any outfit. The UV sensor would be seamlessly incorporated into the design.

Process
Using the Adafruit Circuit Bluefruit, I coded a program that read the data from a UV sensor and lit up an LED strip if the UV level was above 3. This required much trial and error, especially in trying to fit the sensors into the leg band. I soldered wires connecting the Bluefruit to the UV sensor, and made sure the sensor would be able to properly and accurately detect the UV radiation when outside at any angle. I sewed the band together and soldered the LED strip to the Bluefruit as well.
