Patasala

Overview

How might we create an app that simplifies complex administrative tasks for local school staff for a mobile app?

Role

UI/UX Intern

  • Ideation

  • Organizing User Research

  • Creating Mockups (Lo-fi to Hi-fi)

  • Creating Prototypes

Patasala is a start-up that creates administration and communication software for local schools in India. The ultimate challenge of this internship was creating designs that compressed complex administrative and organizational desktop tasks (such as fee collections or attendance management across different school branches) into a mobile app format.

Understanding the Users and Goals

The main users for this mobile app are local school principals, teachers and other administrative staff. Most of the users were found to only have access to mobile phones and not desktops.

Therefore, Patasala needed to transition from a primarily desktop application to mobile. The app also had to solve for staff with different priorities such as communication, administration, and education.

Simpler Tracking of Fee Collections

These pages highlight the key fee statistics of each class and the school as a whole. There is a simple graphic to display the information at a glance. Each card can be expanded for more detailed information.

Direct Messages In App From Staff and Parents

The messaging aspect of the app is divided into messages from staff, parents, and complaints in order to better keep track of feedback given to the management.

Organized Student/Staff Attendance Tracking

The attendance of students and staff can be tracked from one attendance page. The student attendance is categorized by grade level and the staff attendance is categorized by department, as this was the most convenient option for principal users.

Dynamic Home Page

The lower half of the home page (quick access updates) changes based on the changing priorities as the school year and day goes by.
For example, admission status is only highlighted in the beginning of the school year, and exam progress reports are highlighted during year-end finals time. Attendance tracking is shown in the morning and class activity report status is shown in the evening.
